NZ Cycle Trail

ABOUT

Nestled at the foot of Sanctuary Mountain, a beacon in the heart of the Waikato countryside, we are Out in the Styx Guesthouse.
Situated midway between Rotorua and Waitomo Caves Out in the Styx Guesthouse is an ideal spot to explore both of these attractions along with Hobbiton which is barely 30 minutes’ drive. Being just an hour to either coast and their beaches, or to Taupo’s gorgeous lake, there is much to see and do in the area.
Within half an hour are the popular shopping towns of Cambridge and Tirau and it’s only two hours’ drive from Auckland.
Best of all we adjoin Sanctuary Mountain, N.Z’s largest native flora & fauna restoration project where 47kms of pest proof fence surrounds 3500 hectares of virgin native forest, providing sanctuary for the original inhabitants of the forest. With the option of a full day’s hike across the mountain, through to an easy walk to a 16-metre observation tower high in the forest canopy, there is something for everyone.

The Waikato River Trail is only 7km down the road beside Lake Arapuni which offers unlimited walking, cycling & kayaking opportunities. Road cyclists take pleasure in our quiet sealed roads through beautiful rolling countryside with 10km to 100km loops that all fitness levels can enjoy. The Avantidrome in Cambridge makes a great destination along mostly dedicated cycle routes and a pickup/drop off service is available.
Out in the Styx has a fully licensed restaurant where you can relax and replenish after a day’s activity enjoying a delicious home cooked dinner & breakfast all included in the cost of your overnight stay.

There is a choice of shared bunkroom or private ensuite accommodation with a large garden… perfect for intimate or grand occasions. Small conferences & family events are a specialty.

“Mary’s homecooking had us all looking forward and guessing to the next meal”

Wonderful spot to stay with stunning views. Strongly advise that you don’t eat much for two days prior to your visit and you will not need food for a day or so afterwards. Mary and Lance are superb hosts, meals are beautifully prepared, there is a great atmosphere with a spa to sit in at any time of the day but extra special early or later in the day for listening to the bird calls of tui and bellbird.

The Styx is a short distance from Maungatautari Mountain Scenic Reserve and that’s worth at least two days of exploring, a wonderful conservation project that is reviving the native forest. Excellent advice from Lance on how to walk Maungatautari Mountain and a drop off can be arranged. This is a great place for recharging the batteries. Not to be missed.

We stayed a night after doing the ‘Over The Mountain Walk’ at Maungatautari , well worth the effort, and enjoyed a relaxing spa afterwards. Lance and Mary were lovely hosts – nothing was a bother and both had great knowledge of the area and it’s attractions. The evening meal and breakfast were fabulous lots of lovely fresh and tasty dishes – we ate far too much! We would definitely stay again and recommend highly as a weekend stay. Maungatautari  is a magical place where you can see Tuatara, Takahe, Kiwi, Saddlebacks and lots of other birds thanks to the predator free ‘mainland island’ set up created. A wonderful spot.
